Gorkana Meets...Stephen Payne

The thing that gets me up in the morning is... Actually my dogs usually wake me up before anything else so sleeping in is not really an option.

What made me want to get into PR was... When I was in college I submitted a letter to the editor to my local paper and it was printed, generating greater discussion on an issue I cared about. I realized, wow, I could spark a debate with a simple letter.

If I could change one thing about the industry it would be... We are too rigid. Seems like a lot of us do things are certain way because we always have.

The three things I demand in my colleagues... I have three goals, which are somewhat abridged here and edited for a family friendly audience – make the client/business owner happy (and thereby their customers) and you’ll live to fight another day; I’d rather explain why I blew a budget than why something went south in a bad way from lack of preparation; and, when doing an interview or meeting, do your homework and prepare for the curveball that always waits around the next corner.

I always thought I’d be… A lawyer. I planned on going to law school for the longest time.

The one website I always check is... Lately it’s been Twitter. I swore for the longest time I would never use it but damn it’s handy to get a quick check on what’s going on in the world.

I’m a closet reader of… Cookbooks. I collect them and regardless of what type of food they are for I can always find something interesting in them.

The most interesting fact about me is... Most people don’t know I make my own sausage. I know, it’s weird but you really can’t beat food in tube form.

My most prized possession is… My rolodex. What can I say, I’m a dinosaur and I still write down every single contact I make.

My most embarrassing moment was... During my first job in PR, I thought the head of the association actually cared about image and message instead of internal politics. Wow, was I wrong.

If I won the Mega Millions I would... Start a vineyard in Virginia. I’d make the most powerful cabernet sauvignon; cultivate the smelliest cheeses and the spiciest sausages the world has ever known.

In five years’ time PR will be... More critical to the success of businesses and organizations than it is today. All people do now is communicate and keeping ahead of that wave is going to continue to be more of challenge.

My next vacation will be in... Vacation? Not sure what that term means.

What I hope to achieve at the 2013 PRSA International Conference... Having never been to one I’d like to meet as many people as possible (oh, and give a good presentation with my partners in crime from rbb Public Relations!)
